HIV

HIV remains a significant public health concern in the United States, with approximately 1.2 million people living with HIV and ongoing disparities affecting key populations. In 2023, nearly 39,000 individuals were newly diagnosed, underscoring the continued need for comprehensive prevention, early diagnosis, and sustained engagement in care. Infectious diseases specialists play a vital role in HIV care by guiding antiretroviral therapy, managing comorbidities and opportunistic infections, and supporting viral suppression (achieved by only 67% of people with diagnosed HIV as of 2023), highlighting gaps in care. Effective HIV management is essential not only for improving individual health outcomes but also for reducing community transmission and advancing national goals to end the HIV epidemic.
